Design of robotic and mechatronic systems
With our mechatronic roots we have designed many patented solutions for our clients. With our connection and cooperation to the Robotics and Mechatronics department of the University of Twente we have access to many new developments in this area. Our experience combined with new ideas create out of the box solutions for maritime applications.
Virtual Towing Tank
Traditionally the experience of the designer combined with physical model tests are used in the design of maritime applications. By adding a mathematical representation of all related dynamic systems in a model during the design fase valuable insight can be gained and used at an early stage saving time, costs and accidents. With the increasing complexity and interaction of systems in offshore and marine engineering it is unacceptable to find errors only during the commissioning of systems, with the risks of personal injuries, damaging equipment and delays.
In order to profit from modeling it should be possible to get a dependable model without extravagant computational effort. Reduced order modeling is a tool Imotec uses in the design of structures and control systems. An extra benefit can be gained by testing the control software on the model.
Another example is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This can be used to give insight in all kind of flow related applications in an early design stage. Marine CFD even gives insight in effects that cannot be seen or registered during model tests in a traditional way.
With these techniques you can make use of a virtual towing tank! And this at a fraction of the costs and readily available for all kinds of tests.
